An EKG is a non-invasive, painless exam used to determine whether a person's heart rate and rhythm are normal or if heart damage has occurred. The test also can detect decreased blood flow, enlargement of the heart, or the presence of either current or past heart attacks. Once the test is complete, a graphic record is generated showing the heart's electrical impulses.

The first time a person has an EKG, the results become their baseline EKG that will then be used by physicians as a comparison for future cardiac testing. According to a study by the Journal of General Internal Medicine, there is a 54 percent reduction in unnecessary hospital admissions when physicians have access to a patients' baseline EKG.

The Smart Heart Group wants to ensure that every student athlete gets an EKG before they play sports! Help us achieve that goal!

Naperville Central sophomores, juniors and seniors can participate in a free EKG screening Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. Parent permission forms are required and are available in the physical education office. The tests are provided through the Midwest Heart Foundation's Young Hearts for Life program and can help identify abnormalities that could be a sign of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy,a disorder responsible for the deaths of 200 to 300 high school and college athletes each year.

Melissa Jenco reported that  More than 60 area students have learned through free EKG screenings at their schools during the past year that they may have heart conditions The Midwest Heart Foundation in Lombard has provided electrocardiograms to more than 3,500 students from Naperville North and Naperville Central high schools, Fenwick High School in Oak Park and Butler Junior High in Oak Brook through its Young Hearts for Life program.
